Update ServicesKeeping Your Website Fresh

A well-maintained website is most often a successful one. Karks.com can respond quickly to your maintenance requests at a price you can afford.

How Does it Work?

If you’re a Karks.com client, e-mail me, call me or even send me a snail mail. I’ll take it from there and make sure your updates get done quickly and accurately.

How Much Does it Cost?

$50 per hour. I bill by the quarter hour. So, say you send me an update that takes 20 minutes to complete. I’ll charge you for just .25hrs (15 minutes), which will cost you $12.50. When you send an update, there are no minimum charges. I’m not going to charge you for an hour of labor just for a few simple updates (unless they actually take an hour to complete). If your update takes me less than 5 minutes, I may not charge you at all (within reason).

At the end of the month, you’ll receive an invoice from Karks.com with your total balance due. I accept checks, money orders and online payments through PayPal (3% transaction fee added for PayPal payments).

What About Content Management Systems? Can I Update My Own Site?

When it comes to websites, some people are more hands-on than others. If you cringe at technology (like I cringe about fixing things around the house), then a content management system (CMS) is probably not for you.

However, if you ARE comfortable using a computer, you CAN use a content management system to make most content-related updates to your website (it’s still probably a good idea to leave the graphical and site layout changes to me). It’s beneficial in that you: 1. Save money on web update fees; and 2. Updates to your website occur exactly when you want them to, no waiting!

What Kind Of Updates Can I Make With A CMS?
Here are a few examples:

  • Add news stories or press releases.
  • Update the text throughout your website.
  • Upload PDF files for your customers to download.
  • Change a weekly or monthly “special offer” for customers.
  • Post your latest newsletter.
  • Change a picture or create a photo gallery.
  • Update your “links” page.

What Sort Of Things Should I Avoid?
While a CMS can make your life a lot easier and save you money in the long run, there are some things they’re not cut out to do just yet:

  • Major site layout changes.
  • Editing of Flash or other multimedia applications.
  • Depending on what sort of navigation your website has, you may not be able to edit it in a CMS. Some systems come with standard navigation, but sometimes it’s a bit limited.

Are There Any CMS Programs You Recommend?

In fact, there is.  Funny you should ask!  I recommend WordPress.
